Intimidated? We compiled answers to the most commonly asked questions about recreational cannabis in Mississippi.

See your medical doctor, nurse practitioner, or optometrist and get certified. First, schedule an appointment with your doctor. (Note: Any healthcare provider must be certified by the State of Mississippi to prescribe medical marijuana.) If your provider is not authorized, you will need to find one that is.

The Department of Health will issue the patient a card. Once you have gotten a prescription from your doctor, go to the MDOR website and create a patient portal for yourself. Then, submit your Medical Marijuana prescription to the state, and submit your application to participate in the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program. Your application will be processed within 10 days and, if approved, you will receive an email informing you to visit the MS DOH portal to access your Medical Cannabis Card. Once you obtain your card, you may visit any state licensed Medical Cannabis Dispensary.

The Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program (MMCP) provides a safe and accessible program that meets the needs of patients and the public health and safety of all Mississippi residents.

You must make an in-person appointment with your medical provider (medical doctor, optometrist, or nurse practitioner) and have one of the qualifying diagnoses. The conditions approved are as follows:

  • Cancer
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Huntington’s disease
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Glaucoma
  • Spastic Quadriplegia
  • Positive status for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
  • Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
  • Hepatitis
  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Sickle-cell anemia
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Agitation of dementia
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Autism
  • Pain refractory to appropriate opioid management
  • Diabetic/Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Spinal cord disease or severe injury

Also, qualifying is a chronic terminal or debilitating disease or medical condition or its treatment that produces one or more of the following:

  • Cachexia or Wasting Syndrome
  • Chronic pain
  • Severe or intractable nausea
  • Seizures
  • Severe and persistent muscle spasms including, but not limited to, those characteristics of Multiple Sclerosis

You will receive an electronic identification card for a specific period or a maximum of 1 year.

Finally, you can now select a licensed dispensary to purchase medical marijuana.

The card holder can buy approximately 3 ounces of Medical Marijuana every month. The person must go through the recertification process annually and renew the Medical Marijuana card.
